Fine Wines & Spirits

“The cellar is often the unsuspected resting place of a significant part of our heritage. Even when well-preserved, wines and spirits are perishable goods that must be sold at the peak of their potential to fully capitalize on their value.”

Pierre-Luc Nourry

Wine Auctions: A Global and Highly Diverse Market

In this international market, France—and Paris in particular—remains a key hub for the sale of fine wines and spirits. For the past five years, Pierre-Luc Nourry, with the support of expert Denis Bernard, has been developing the Wines & Spirits department at Aguttes auction house. Through the four auctions he organizes each year, he brings his expertise and deep market knowledge to spotlight your bottles.

Sought-After Wine Regions and Estates

Burgundy, with its intricate patchwork of “climats,” whose richness and uniqueness earned them a UNESCO World Heritage designation in 2015, has long set the tone for the wine market. The famous parcel-based classification of this prestigious wine region results in a wide variety of crus, but also inherently limits production to small or even tiny quantities per estate and vintage. When a winemaker’s work is recognized globally, the value of their production can skyrocket—as is the case with wines from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, Leroy, Rousseau, Roumier, Jayer, Bizot, Leflaive, or Comtes Lafon.

Where Burgundy must by nature produce limited quantities, Bordeaux’s great classified growths have long relied on consistent quality, which has built their enduring reputation. Collectors know this well, and are always willing to pay a premium for First Growths such as Ausone, Cheval-Blanc, Haut-Brion, Lafite-Rothschild, Latour, Yquem, Margaux, Mouton-Rothschild, and La Mission Haut-Brion.

The Rhône Valley also holds its own, with leading names like Jean-Louis Chave, Henri Bonneau, Domaine Jamet, as well as Jaboulet, Guigal, and Emmanuel Reynaud's legendary Château Rayas. These wines are increasingly sought after for their aromatic richness, aging potential, and a recent surge in market value.

Sought-After Spirits

When it comes to rare spirits, the enthusiasm for whisky and rum is far more than a passing trend. The sharp rise in prices for rare spirits is not just due to increased global demand—it also reflects changing consumer habits. Once again, the limited release of small batches, vintage bottles, or special editions boosts prices by playing on scarcity. Year after year, rare spirits continue to break records, with the most exceptional bottles sometimes fetching seven-figure sums.

The Story Behind the Bottle Is the Story of Passion

Collectors treasure their bottles not only for their contents but also for what they represent—the pleasure they bring. Smelling the complex aromas of a 19th-century Cognac, gazing into the amber hue of a Caribbean rum aged for decades in a quiet warehouse halfway around the world, or savoring a sip from a Domaine de la Romanée-Conti bottle—our senses and our dreams fuel our passions.

It all starts with the producers—the first artisans and creators of these masterpieces—each with their unique, personal, and precise vision of their craft, whether in wine, whisky, rum, or sake. The fruit of their labor is nothing short of sacred.

From the hard work of the winemaker who strives daily to capture the essence of the land, working within nature’s narrow constraints, to the finesse required of the master blender who must determine the perfect moment to bottle a malt entrusted to him by his predecessors—and who, with a trained nose and years of experience, may one day create a whisky he will never taste in its final form—the dedication involved in crafting these exceptional products is at the root of the admiration they inspire in collectors and connoisseurs alike.

The joy of owning these bottles lies in all they symbolize: effort, perseverance, and sensitivity. It’s no surprise they are highly coveted—and, in some cases, extremely valuable.

Key Criteria in Bottle Valuation

The two fundamental criteria for valuing a bottle are origin and vintage. These determine the market reference points and allow comparisons with the most recent auction results, both in France and internationally. Of course, condition and storage also play a key role. We assist private individuals and professionals wishing to sell all or part of their wine cellar, offering accurate valuations and showcasing their bottles through expert analysis, wide-reaching promotion, and secure logistics—essential for achieving a successful sale.

Even if well-preserved, wine and spirits are perishable goods that must be sold at their peak if not consumed. You may be sitting on a treasure—don’t hesitate to contact us!
