The History of Maison Jaboulet
The origins of Maison Jaboulet date back to the 13th century when Chevalier Gaspard de Stérimberg settled on the hills of Tain-l’Hermitage and built a chapel there. Several centuries later, in 1834, Antoine Jaboulet founded the Jaboulet winery. In 1919, Paul and his brother Henri Jaboulet took over the estate, purchasing the chapel and renaming the house Paul Jaboulet Aîné.
In 1961, one of their wines was ranked among the twelve best wines of the 20th century, propelling the estate onto the international stage. Paul Jaboulet’s son, Louis, led the company until 1977, followed by his own son, Gérard, until 1997. After Gérard Jaboulet, his cousin, Michel Jaboulet, managed the estate until 2006, when the Frey group acquired the winery. Today, Caroline Frey, a renowned French oenologist, heads Maison Jaboulet. She has implemented a vinification process that respects the estate’s traditional expertise while incorporating modern production techniques.
The Paul Jaboulet winery spans 80 hectares, producing wines from both the Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône regions. The Northern Rhône vineyards grow Syrah, Viognier, Roussanne, and Marsanne, while the Southern Rhône vineyards cultivate Grenache, Cinsault, Mourvèdre, Clairette, and Bourboulenc.
Maison Paul Jaboulet Aîné is best known for its Hermitage La Chapelle, a blend from the Méal and Bessards slopes. This particular wine received prestigious recognition in 1961. However, the estate also produces wines from Crozes-Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, Saint-Péray, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Beaumes de Venise, Tavel, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, Côtes-du-Rhône, and Ventoux.
