The first traces of the Château d'Yquem estate date back to the 15th century. In 1593, Jacques Sauvage purchased the estate. Over the next century and a half, the estate remained in the Sauvage family, who continually expanded the property by acquiring additional parcels of land. They also built the estate's château during this period. The estate took the name Yquem in 1711. The cellar was created over a century later, in 1826. In 1855, Château d'Yquem's wine was featured in the World's Fair organized by Napoleon III, earning high praise for its wine and the distinction of Grand Cru Classé. The story from there is well-known, as all of Europe, along with Russia and Japan, flocked to the château to taste this exquisite wine. However, the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries were not the best years for Château d'Yquem.
The estate was invaded by insects called phylloxera, which attacked the vines. In 1914, Château d'Yquem was transformed into a military hospital, and the owner of the estate went off to fight for France. The years following World War I were challenging, but the owners still implemented on-site bottling at the château, and the estate played a role in establishing the AOC Sauternes classification for its wines. After World War II, Château d'Yquem expanded internationally, with 1975 being marked by the exceptional quality of its wine.
The estate was purchased in 1996 by the LVMH group, which has taken great care to uphold Château d'Yquem's values of modernity, authenticity, craftsmanship, and embracing the present. Château d'Yquem's wine stands out for its rich sweetness, a key to its success. This Premier Cru Supérieur of the Sauternes appellation is a luxurious blend of Sémillon and Sauvignon. A true prestige wine, Château d'Yquem has long been a delight at grand dinners. We regularly auction Château d'Yquem wines.
