Focus on Jean Després : The visionary goldsmith at auction

Jean Després (1889-1980) was an iconic figure in 20th-century goldsmithing, renowned for his bold creations that combined functionality with refined aesthetics. His artistic career and unique vision left their mark on the history of French decorative arts.

Born in Paris, Després first studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, where he was influenced by the artistic movements of his time, notably Cubism and Art Deco. Very early on, he understood the importance of harmony between form and function. After the First World War, he began to make a name for himself, creating pieces of goldsmithery that stood out for their modernity.

Després stands out for his ability to fuse art and function. His pieces, often made from silver-plated metal, feature refined textures and hammered finishes that reveal his exceptional craftsmanship. Each piece, whether it's a tea service or a decorative bowl, presents a perfect harmony between aesthetics and practicality.

The goldsmith has also innovated by collaborating with architects to create bespoke objects, integrating his art into prestigious interiors. His creations are often marked with an incised signature and a goldsmith's hallmark, guaranteeing their authenticity.

Jean Després' legacy continues to inspire many contemporary designers. His works are often sought after by collectors, and his vision of modern design still resonates in the art world. Today, he is recognised not only for his talent, but also for his contribution to redefining goldsmithing as an art form.

At the Aguttes auction on 14 November 2024, several of his iconic creations will be on offer, providing a unique opportunity to acquire pieces that bear witness to his artistic legacy. Jean Després remains an essential master of the French decorative arts, whose influence endures.
