THE 20TH-CENTURY DECORATIVE ARTS HIGHLIGHTED

This fall, Aguttes is shining a spotlight on 20th-century decorative arts. A significant focus is placed on Art Nouveau glassware, with Emile Gallé, a brilliant glassmaker, leading the way.
While his early productions, from the so-called "transparent" period, featured translucent glass with polychrome enamel decoration inspired by nature motifs and enjoyed considerable success as early as the 1870s, it was particularly after the 1878 Universal Exhibition in Paris, a real milestone in his career, that Gallé achieved worldwide fame. He significantly contributed to the resurgence of the glass industry by establishing a serial production workshop.
The technique evolved towards the use of colored and opaque multilayer glass, engraved with floral and insect motifs. From the 1890s, production intensified to become industrial, as there were nearly a million pieces in existence at the time of the glass master's death in 1904. The Gallé glassworks continued to produce serialized works until its closure in 1931.
