Born in Nantes in 1861, Maxime Maufra maintained a lifelong connection to Brittany. He devoted himself exclusively to painting from 1890 onwards, spending time in Pont-Aven, where he encountered Gauguin and interacted with Renoir, Puvis de Chavannes, Sisley, and Pissarro. Although he initially subscribed to Symbolist and Synthetist doctrines, he gradually gravitated toward Impressionism, while retaining a unique freedom in his interpretation of nature.
