Concerned about his dependency, his mother encouraged him to take up painting upon his release from the hospital.

His early works were influenced by Impressionism, featuring a palette of contrasting colors, while the themes often reflected his bohemian life in Montmartre, including its cabarets, alleys, and old churches. His considerable talent was quickly recognized, and he exhibited as early as 1909 in the Clovis Sagot gallery. The work of the artist, which could be mistakenly labeled as naive, caught the attention of art dealer Libaude and captivated Paul Pétridès. Although Utrillo fits the profile of a cursed artist, he achieved success during his lifetime. Recognition came swiftly, and individual exhibitions were dedicated to him in 1913 and 1919.
