20 th Century Decorative Arts
Born in 1859, Louis Majorelle was a highly influential French cabinetmaker in the Art Nouveau movement of the École de Nancy. As the heir to his family’s business, he began by creating Louis XV-style furniture but soon discovered the work of Émile Gallé, which inspired him to develop a new, unique style.
Majorelle skillfully adapted Gallé’s naturalist themes, blending fauna and flora into his furniture designs with remarkable woodwork and marquetry. He established a forge workshop to complement his cabinetry, incorporating harmonious metalwork details.
His pieces are distinguished by acid-etched glass with foliage motifs, floral marquetry on wood, and gilt bronze shaped into various stems and flowers, forming luxurious tables, lamps, desks, and chairs. Over time, his designs evolved towards simplicity. At the 1900 Universal Exposition, Majorelle presented more streamlined pieces, which achieved great success. This marked a turning point, after which Majorelle decided to produce his works in series in collaboration with prominent glassmakers of his era.
Today, Majorelle’s rich body of work is highly prized internationally, and his creations frequently feature in our auction sales.
