20 th Century Decorative Arts
Born in 1870, Jacques Grüber was a prominent glass artist and a founding member of the École de Nancy. His time spent in the Parisian studio of Gustave Moreau allowed him to master drawing and painting, an essential foundation for his career as a decorator. Upon returning to Nancy, he taught decorative composition at the Beaux-Arts and created designs for Daum glassware and Majorelle furniture.
Grüber excelled in Art Nouveau, continually reinventing it through his chosen specialty: stained glass. He became the preeminent master of modern stained glass in his time, bringing innovative techniques to polychrome glasswork through the use of English glass and raised glass cabochons.
His exceptional talent is evident in the graphic and pictorial quality of his work. By skillfully layering colored and etched glass, he infused his pieces with the floral motifs characteristic of Art Nouveau. The art market occasionally features rare paintings by Grüber, mostly sketches for his stained glass projects, as well as a few ebony furniture pieces, which are highly prized by collectors in Aguttes’ decorative arts auctions.
