20 th Century Decorative Arts
Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann was a French decorator of Alsatian origin and a leading figure in Art Deco during the 1920s and 1930s. Drawing inspiration from the architecture of his time, he designed his own furniture, becoming a self-taught visionary in the field of interior decoration. Ruhlmann innovated by drawing on 18th-century works and created spectacular pieces, known for their luxurious finishes and elegant new forms for the era. His designs, with their refined lines, are reminiscent of the aesthetic of Joseph Hoffmann's works.
Ruhlmann paid meticulous attention to detail, from keyholes and handles to the sculpted feet of furniture. He used noble woods, ivory marquetry, ebony, and bronze to create pieces of exceptional quality. Among his famous creations are the Dubly smoking room game tables, the “État rectangle” cabinet, and the Bureau dos d’âne. These masterpieces adorned the homes of wealthy industrialists, politicians, and high-society figures.
