Impressionist & Modern Art
Henri Jean Guillaume Martin was born in 1860 in Toulouse. He studied at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown before joining the studio of Jules Garipuy. In 1879, the young artist received a scholarship that allowed him to travel to Paris, where he continued his training with Jean-Paul Laurens. In 1885, he took a trip to Italy, which left a lasting impact on his work. Observing the Italian Renaissance masters and early artists significantly influenced Martin’s imagination, and he developed an art with clear affinities to Symbolism—he exhibited with the Rose-Croix and became an avid reader of contemporary writers linked to this movement.
However, starting in the late 1890s, Martin began to embrace a new approach influenced by Neo-Impressionism. He didn’t fully adopt the scientific principles of Neo-Impressionism—such as the optical blending of colors and the methodical juxtaposition of complementary colors—but instead was inspired by the breakdown of the brushstroke to make the panel surface vibrate.
In 1900, Henri Martin acquired the Marquayrol estate in Labastide-du-Vert, a peaceful village in the Lot region. For nearly forty years, he created numerous paintings of the Vert Valley and its surroundings. Like Monet in Giverny, he continuously painted his pond and the surrounding flowers, whose vibrant colors and shimmering reflections resulted in lively and radiant compositions. The artist’s talent is recognized internationally, and his works attract buyers and collectors from around the world.
