Gilbert Poillerat: Master of Art Ironwork in the 20th Century
Gilbert Poillerat is undoubtedly one of the greatest art ironworkers of the 20th century. After training at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studying ironwork at the École Boulle, he began his professional career in Edgar Brandt's workshop before establishing his own practice. In 1928, he showcased his contemporary ironwork at the Salon d’Automne, marked by the prevalent return to curves of that era, before moving towards a more streamlined style in the 1930s.
Poillerat is renowned for his ability to transform metal into delicate works of art, combining exceptional finesse and elegance. Through his technical perfection, he contributed to innovation in the field of ironwork by introducing new techniques and experimenting with different materials such as brass, bronze, and wrought iron. His works are often adorned with gilding, glass, or stone elements, adding a touch of luxury and sophistication.
Initially, much of his work focused on monumental pieces, such as the doors of the Palais de Chaillot and the grilles and lighting fixtures of the Eiffel Tower's restaurant. He also created balustrades and stair railings for private commissions. In this context, he crafted numerous unique pieces in collaboration with the period's prominent interior designers and decorators, including Jacques Adnet, André Arbus, and Jean-Michel Frank. During the 1940s, Poillerat designed numerous interior objects, lighting fixtures, and furniture pieces for a wealthy clientele. In the 1960s, his work saw an increased use of bronze, reflecting an increasingly minimalist style.
