20 th Century Decorative Arts
Born in 1846, the French ceramist and cabinetmaker Émile Gallé founded the École de Nancy in 1901, a pivotal institution in French Art Nouveau.
Gallé quickly focused his skills on glassmaking, creating highly original, often polychrome pieces featuring acid-etched and relief decorations. This technique enabled him to produce a wide range of series-based creations. The young artist demonstrated remarkable creativity, particularly through his daring use of diverse materials in glass.
With a profound sensitivity to nature, Gallé developed a unique decorative language grounded in naturalist themes. Transparent and opaque glass adorned with Japonist and abstract floral motifs showcases the inventiveness of an artist with a botanist’s eye. Gallé achieved significant technical advances, including glass marquetry, blown-molded glass, hammered glass, and polychrome enamel decorations, all of which are evident in his goblets, vases, and cabochons. His multilayered glass technique allowed for exceptional precision in designs.
Gallé's work gained recognition at the 1889 and 1900 Universal Expositions, where his unique pieces and spectacular installations shone. However, it was the industrialization of his production, with sales locations across Europe, that made high-quality series pieces widely accessible. These pieces were generally marked as "Établissements Gallé."
On the art market, Gallé’s works can be categorized into three main types: prestigious, unique pieces crafted during his lifetime; "industrial" pieces produced in large quantities, especially in the 1920s; and series-based works. While series productions are frequently found in our catalogs, signed unique pieces by the artist are rare and highly sought after at auction.
