Throughout Manet's career, the conservatism of his milieu was in constant conflict with his visionary talent. The Salon still dominated the Parisian art world in the mid-1800s, and although a growing avant-garde began to see it as a restrictive and moralizing force, Manet continually strove to gain its favor.

Manet is known for his radical painting technique, using quick and visible brushstrokes that anticipated Impressionism. However, he distinguished himself from the Impressionists through his use of black figures and contours, and his tendency to work in the studio rather than en plein air. His compositions are often bold, with strong contrasts of light and shadow, and an unusual use of perspective.

Several of his masterpieces, such as "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe" (1863) and "Olympia" (1863), were openly criticized and judged as too revolutionary.

In the late 1860s, Charles Baudelaire and Émile Zola defended his progressive work, gaining the support of the avant-garde.

Manet is considered one of the fathers of Impressionism, although he maintained some distance from the movement. His work paved the way for modern art, influencing generations of artists with his innovative approach to painting. His boldness in subject choice and painting technique made him a precursor of the artistic trends that dominated the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
