Edouard Léon Cortes

Edouard Léon Cortès, born in 1882 in Lagny-sur-Marne, was himself the son of a painter and the grandson of an artisan. Following in his father’s footsteps—a popular court painter in Spain—he entered the École des Beaux-Arts at 17. By the age of 20, he exhibited at the 1902 Salon, where he achieved great success with a nighttime view of the streets of Paris. Admired by both peers and collectors, he continually sought to capture and share the unique atmosphere of Paris. With an Impressionist approach, he was captivated by light and its transformative effects. His exceptional talent lay in his ability to make his canvases glow from within.

His preferred subjects were Parisian landscapes. He observed the city’s modernity and daily life, poetically emphasizing the beauty of a changing Paris. Cortès still enjoys commercial success today, with his works fetching strong prices at auction.
