20 th Century Decorative Arts
Edgar Brandt was a renowned French ironworker, designer, and arms manufacturer, widely recognized for his contributions to the Art Deco style and his innovations in metalwork in the early 20th century.
Born in Paris, Brandt initially trained as an ironworker and pursued further studies at the École nationale professionnelle de Vierzon. After serving in the French army, he established his own workshop, Établissements Brandt, in Paris in 1902, producing both light arms and experimenting with decorative ironwork, blending traditional and contemporary forms.
Following his success at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts, where he showcased his creations in Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann's prestigious Pavillon du Collectionneur, Brandt opened the Galerie Brandt at 27 Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris, the city's first decorative art gallery. His gallery exhibited his artistic ironwork, including gates, furniture, sculptures, and lighting, all reflecting the geometric lines, stylized natural motifs, and elegance of Art Deco.
During this period, Brandt collaborated with glass manufacturers Daum and Lalique, exhibiting not only his works but also those of other renowned artists. In 1930, his gallery hosted the first exhibition of a group of notable animal sculptors, including Pompon, Édouard-Marcel Sandoz, Paul Jouve, Georges Guyot, and Gaston Suisse. This exhibition was a resounding success, leading to regular animalier exhibits at the gallery.
Brandt also expanded internationally, opening a second exhibition hall in London and a branch in New York called Ferro Brandt, which became a hub for showcasing major Art Deco artists in North America. Among his most famous works are the "Ombelles" iron gate, the gates of the Palais des Nations in Geneva, and the stunning "Feuilles d’Acanthe" fireplace screen.
