Charles Lapicque

The modern and contemporary art market, along with 20th-century art history, recognizes Charles Lapicque as an important contemporary painter whose works consistently generate excitement. This enthusiasm comes from collectors, exhibitions, galleries, and modern and contemporary art museums, as well as at auction.

Born in the Rhône region, Charles Lapicque was raised by his uncle, who took him to Brittany every summer—a place he would return to throughout his life. He painted and drew from a young age, while also pursuing outstanding academic studies that led him to graduate from the École Centrale in 1921. Lapicque decided to devote himself entirely to painting in 1928, but he had to maintain a scientific job studying chromatic fields, an endeavor that would influence his artwork. His artistic activity continued, and he created works for the Palais de la Découverte in 1937. After the war, he returned to Brittany, where he found themes that would inspire him throughout his career.

Borrowing from Fauvism and Cubism, Lapicque developed his own technique, combining ribbon-like applications, layers, interlaces, and loops with a new spatial construction. His works are surprisingly realistic in the sensations they evoke, creating a unique figurative and gestural style with allusive qualities.
