André Sornay: Innovator in 20th Century Design
André Sornay was a French cabinetmaker and designer known for his innovative approach to 20th-century design. In 1919, he inherited the family woodworking business in Lyon and quickly transformed the classic furniture offerings into resolutely modern pieces.
Influenced by the Bauhaus and De Stijl movements, Sornay aligned himself with the Union des Artistes Modernes, which included avant-garde artists like Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Chareau, all dedicated to adapting art to modern life and making it accessible to the public.
Sornay's creations thus combine tradition and modernity, using high-quality materials paired with pure, geometric lines for great functionality. His harmoniously proportioned furniture, reflecting the modernist influences of the time, emphasizes simplicity combined with elegance. Sornay is particularly recognized for developing the cloutage technique, for which he filed a patent in 1932, allowing the assembly of fine wood veneer panels to the structure of the furniture with decorative nails. This led to the creation of clouted furniture designed to be accessible to the masses. Subsequent patents in assembly and mounting techniques, such as the "Sornay rod" patented in 1953, contributed to the designer’s acclaim.
Although his work was not yet recognized at the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, André Sornay's fame grew during the 1937 Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques dans la Vie Moderne, where he received a bronze medal for his personal desk. His creations, which continue to influence contemporary designers, are exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and remain highly sought after by collectors.
