Aguttes, an Auction House Founded in Clermont-Ferrand

Aguttes was founded in Clermont-Ferrand in 1974. Immediately after qualifying as an auctioneer, Claude Aguttes, a native of the Cantal region, established himself in Auvergne at Place des Salins. For the first 20 years of his career, he travelled the roads of the region and central France in his Volvo station wagon in search of works and objects.

The discovery of a lifetime came in a small kitchen near the railway station: Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin's Autoportrait aux besicles (Self-Portrait with Spectacles, 1771), which sold for 6.6 million francs.

Recognizing the increasing internationalization of the art market, Claude Aguttes seized the opportunity to establish the auction house in Paris in 1996. Ever since, he has continued to return to Auvergne each weekend, to Blanzat, where he still lives today. Remaining family-owned and independent, Aguttes retains a special connection with the region and organizes monthly appraisal days with Maître Aguttes in Blanzat.
