Son of the famous Italian luthier Nicola Gagliano, Giovanni Gagliano (ca. 1785-1819) belongs to one of the most illustrious families of Neapolitan luthiers. The violin we are pleased to offer for sale on November 30th, during our auction dedicated to string quartet instruments and bows, is a remarkable example of this maker, in excellent condition. Made in Naples in 1803, this instrument is authentic in all its major parts and bears its original label. It is composed of a two-piece back of flamed maple, sides of maple matching the back, a two-piece spruce top with wide, regular pores, and a scroll carved from flamed maple. Its varnish is of a golden brown-yellow color on a gold ground.
