Impressionist and modern art: Neuilly painter Raymond Feuillatte
On 19 September, Aguttes will be auctioning works from the studio of Neuilly painter Raymond Feuillate (1901-1971) in over a hundred different numbers. A student at the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and then the École des Arts Décoratifs, he was awarded his first prize in 1924. In 1933, a grant from the City of Paris enabled him to visit Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco. From this revealing trip, he brought back landscapes and portraits that earned him a place among the finest Orientalist artists. He was also an excellent chronicler of Parisian life and a true lover of the landscapes of the South of France, whose compositions are reminiscent of those of Yves Brayer.

Asian Weeks from 18 to 27 September 2023
Asian art, one of our main speciality, will be in the spotlight from 18 to 27 September.

Les enfants of Mai Trung Thứ (1909-1980)
The 39th edition of our 'Asian Painters, Major Works' auction will take place following 8 days of public exhibition. The auction will feature the work Les enfants by Mai Trung Thứ. This painting charms the viewer with its liveliness and multitude of characters. It is rare in Mai Trung Thứ's work to find so many individuals in a single painting. Many of Mai Trung Thứ's compositions feature only a very small number of figures, in a pared-down setting. Here, the artist depicts, with his characteristic precision, a flock of children with spontaneous attitudes. Bathing, arranging a bed of tulips, fighting or perched on a tree, these children offer a wide range of expressions. The rhythm of the colours and shapes and their treatment of space enliven this scene with a unique character.

Phạm Hậu (1903-1995) and the artistic revival of lacquerware
A key artist of 20th-century Vietnam, Phạm Hậu contributed to the recognition of lacquerware as a true art in its own right, whereas it had long been restricted to handicrafts. The screen The rapids of Cho-bo, lacquer enhanced with gold, silver and looted mother-of-pearl, takes up Phạm Hậu's favourite themes, the fauna and flora of his country. Indeed, his lacquers are inspired by the beauty of Vietnamese landscapes. He pays homage to the lush vegetation and thus recalls the prosperity and natural wealth of his country. The master lacquerer embellishes the traditional lacquer technique with pillared mother-of-pearl and a rare ultramarine green. The gold highlights evoke the sun shimmering on the rocks, while the silver highlights underline the foam of the waves.
