The art of complication at Patek Philippe has been at the heart of the manufacture’s expertise since its founding in 1839. Introduced in 2014, this reference represents a major milestone in the development of the perpetual calendar chronograph, both technically and aesthetically. It is a rare opportunity for a collector to acquire a grand complication timepiece that has become a true “trophy” in the world of watch auctions.

Our example, carefully preserved by its current owner, is complete with all of its original accessories, attesting to the care shown by the collector since acquiring the timepiece at the Patek Philippe salons, as evidenced by a note on the original certificate dated June 26, 2014. This version is no longer available in the manufacture’s current catalogue, having been replaced by the third generation, which was still in production in 2023.

The presence of the tachymeter scale is an important feature to consider, as it is the defining characteristic of our reference 5270G-014, distinguishing it from the first version. All other indications had already been used in the previous generation: day of the week and month displayed in apertures at 12 o’clock, two counters for the 30-minute totalizer and running seconds, a subsidiary dial at 6 o’clock for the date with an aperture for the moon phases, double apertures for the leap-year indication in red at 5 o’clock and the day/night indicator at 7 o’clock, as well as a railway minute track graduated to one-fifth of a second.

The use of blue for the dial is particularly noteworthy for this grand complication, which until 2014 was most often produced with silvered or black dials, except for special commissions made on request. Launched in 2011, the reference 5270 initially stood out with a silvered dial and without a tachymeter scale.

The reference 5270G-014 was introduced by Patek Philippe to mark its 175th anniversary in 2014. Heir to a great horological tradition dating back to the first serially produced wristwatch with chronograph and perpetual calendar, launched in 1941 under reference 1518, the 5270G-014 in white gold with its “sunburst blue” dial is a rare and highly sought-after piece among collectors.
