Whilst convalescing at Dr Achille Delmas’s sanatorium in Ivry-sur-Seine (where he was given only very small doses), Artaud suffered terribly from a lack of drugs and begged his friend to bring him a dose of laudanum.
‘I am ill and bedridden in Ivry, where you have visited me twice. I thought I was going to die yesterday afternoon, Sunday, around 3 o’clock. A tiny amount of 5 grams saved me. If you could find me something tomorrow and bring it to me, it would mean more to me than you can imagine. But what a wicked spirit had taken hold of you outside the St Germain des Prés metro station.”…
