Les Diaboliques.
Paris, E. Dentu, 1874.
8vo, (2) leaves including a portrait of the author, 354 pp., (1) leaf. Contemporary red half-maroquin with corners, plain spine, author, title and date in gold, cover preserved [V. Champs] (very slight signs of age).
Carteret, I, 110–112.
First edition, for which no large-format version was produced.
An exceptional copy enriched with 12 loose plates, engraved in black on copper by Félicien Rops after his own compositions, a series of engravings produced by the artist between 1882 and 1886 for a new edition by Alphonse Lemerre, but Rops’s prints never officially accompanied Barbey’s text as part of an illustrated edition.
A fine copy, well bound in morocco leather signed by Victor Champs.
“A very rare and highly sought-after work, the edition having been partly destroyed following a lawsuit”
