Contemporary red morocco, ribbed spine, title and volume number in gold, a gold ‘B’ stamped at the bottom of the spine, compartments decorated with small ironwork and edged with a double fillet, triple gilt fillet with fleurons at the corners, double fillet on the edges, scrolls on the cap bands, all gilt (slight rubbing on the bindings, particularly on the cap bands, oxidation).

A very fine edition in a binding attributed to Derôme.
Complete with the author’s portrait, engraved on copper after Eisen by Fiquet, and the 46 superb plates, engraved on copper in black after Cipriani, Cochin, Eisen, Greuze, Menuet and Moreau, and engraved on copper in black by Bartolozzi, Choffard, Duclos, de Ghendt, Helman, Henriquez, de Launay, de Longueil, Martini, Massard, Aloreau, Ponce, Prévost and Simonet.
Although the titles of Volumes II, III and IV bear the date 1773, they were not completed until 1775 (Cohen).
