The Guest of the Dead.

Paris, Presses du Livre français, 1948.

Large 8vo, 28 pp., partly in the original format, 4 drypoint etchings in black by Otto Wols. Modern paperback with flaps, cover illustrated by Wols (spine slightly sun-faded, top of cover similarly affected and very slight oxidation of the paper of the engravings, but a fine copy that has remained fresh).

First edition of the French translation by Marthe Robert.

Single print run, as the copper plates were scratched after printing.

Limited edition of 270 copies. One of the 100 printed by Montval with the 4 engravings, numbered 61.

Collection containing three other little-known short stories by Kafka: In Our Synagogue, The Sword and

New Lamps.

‘The reader who wishes to enter Kafka’s world pauses at first, dazzled, overwhelmed, wounded and drawn in all at once; but as soon as they have crossed the threshold, they recognise the all-powerful influence of this world on their own life and that they are not as well-defended, as impenetrable as that first encounter had led them to believe”, Marthe Robert (1946)
