Contemporary marbled fawn calfskin with pebbled grain, plain spine decorated with a black title label and volume number, three gold fillets framing the covers, gilt fillet on the edges, gilt roulette on the endpapers, gilt edges (corners worn, small, discreet wormhole on the spine, scuffing on some edges and endpapers, a few pages oxidised, slight marginal foxing throughout).

The illustrations consist of an engraved title page in each volume, a frontispiece in the first volume, 243 copperplate engravings in black after Monnet, Bardin, Bidauld, Caresme, Desrais, Houel, Kobell, Le Clerc, Leprince, de Loutherbourg and Meyer, 243 vignettes at the head of each piece and 226 tailpieces.
