Blue morocco, spine with raised dotted raised bands, title, author, place and date in gold, richly decorated panels, double gilt line on the headbands and footbands, triple gilt line framing the covers, gilt scrolls and lines on the endpapers, gilt edges [Chambolle-Duru] (marginal foxing on some leaves).
First edition.
The illustrations consist of a portrait of Loti on the frontispiece, six plates, a vignette at the head of the text and a tailpiece, all engraved by G. Manchon after the delicate illustrations by Paul Léon Jazet.
Engravings accompanied by two pre-letter sequences.
Limited edition of 235 copies, this one being no. 9.
Copy enhanced with a watercolour by Jazet, signed and dated 1888 on the half-title page, with a dedication from the author, signed and dated 1915:
“To Mr G. Loche, thanking him for having adorned my books with such luxury and good taste…”; and a postcard with a signed dedication by the author.
