‎Paris, H. Fournier, Bookseller and Publisher, 1844.

Quarto, (4)-295-(1) pp., black frontispiece, 36 colour plates and 146 woodcuts in the text, title and running text printed in red. Contemporary green half-shagreen, smooth spine decorated with gilt panels and blind-stamped fillets, gilt title, double gilt fillet framing the covers (some foxing, frontispiece detached, corners worn, some rubbing to the binding).

First edition of Grandville’s masterpiece, printed on heavy vellum.

First edition of one of Grandville’s most curious illustrations, featuring a black frontispiece, 36 superb plates printed in black and hand-coloured at the time using wash techniques with highlights of colour, and numerous wood-engraved vignettes based on his drawings.

A work considered to be the first surrealist book.

The text is by Taxile Delord (1815–1877), a French journalist and politician, who also contributed to Les Fleurs de Grandville.

A single entry in the CCFr (BnF).

“One of Grandville’s finest works and among the most curious, very well printed” (Carteret, III, 285).
