Hunting Register(s) of His Royal Highness the Duke of Berry.

(registers of game supplied or hunted)

Small in-4, (86) leaves, some of which are blank. Contemporary green half-vellum binding with corner pieces (heavily worn, with stains, discolouration, etc.; 8 leaves, including 2 blank ones, are missing).

Brown or sepia ink, hasty, untidy handwriting, on lined paper.

The manuscript begins in 1817 and runs until 1826, following the assassination of Charles-Ferdinand d’Artois in February 1820; as the hunts were taken over by his wife, the final notes and lists therefore relate to those of the Duchess of Berry.

The records mainly concern hunts at Bagatelle and Saint Cloud.

The manuscript details the inventory of rabbits, ducks, woodcocks, partridges… a large part of which is a precise register of the game supplied (by animal, quantities…) no doubt kept by the steward(s).

Numerous erasures, a few torn pages.

Engraved label: Bechard, paper merchant to the House of His Royal Highness the Duke of Berry and Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Orléans. In Paris, on the inside front cover.
