L.A.S. ‘Rousseau’, Monquin, 14 March 1770, [to the Marquis de Beffroy, Governor of Bourgoin]; 1 page, folio.

At the top of the letter, Rousseau wrote this quatrain:

                                       ‘Poor blind men we are!

                                          Heaven, unmask the impostors

                                           And force their barbaric hearts

To open up to the gaze of men”…

Rousseau asks Beffroy to have a parcel delivered to the Chevalier de Menon, and thanks him “for all the kindnesses with which you have showered me during my stay in this country; my wife, who, like myself, has been deeply touched by yours and by those which Madame la Marquise has not disdained to bestow upon her, joins her thanks to mine, and whilst the fear of stirring up our regrets and undermining the resolutions we have made prevents us from coming to ask for your instructions and fulfilling this duty in person, we both beg you to be assured that it is no less dear to our hearts”…
