Madame Bovary: Provincial Life.

Paris: Michel Lévy frères, 1857.

2 volumes in-16, (2) folios, 232 pp. and (2) folios, pp. (233)–(490); 35 pp. (catalogue). Modern Lavallière half-maroquin, ribbed spine, author’s name, title and volume number gilded, date stamped at the foot, blind-stamped fillet on the covers, gilded head, covers and spine preserved (spine slightly faded, very slight rubbing on one rib, minor marginal imperfections including very slight soiling, a few marks and minute foxing).

Vicaire III, 721. Carteret, Romantique, 263 (which incorrectly states the format as in-12).

A genuine first edition from the very first print run of one of the masterpieces of French literature.

A fine copy in a lovely, well-preserved binding, unsigned but perfectly executed.

The margins have been generously preserved (h 180 mm), as have the covers and spine of Volume 1.

Complete with the publisher’s catalogue, which is bound in at the end of the second volume.

The dedication page to Senard, bound here before the half-title page of Volume I, bears the printing error—still uncorrected from the first print run—‘Senart’ instead of ‘Senard’.
