8 volumes, small quarto. 19th-century fawn half-calf, with a decorated raised spine, a title label and gilt title (slight wear from use, a few foxing spots).
First edition.
Several hundred plates, some fold-out, engraved in black.
They depict the costumes of various monastic, religious and military orders, sometimes with their decorations, engraved by Duclos, Giffart, de Poilly and Thomassin.
The work was the most significant on the subject at the time.
Hélyot died in 1716; the last three volumes of his work were published posthumously.
A lovely typographical mark featuring Coignard’s numerals and motto on the title pages.
