Contemporary marbled tan calfskin, spine with 6 raised bands, burgundy title label, gilded floral panels, gilt roulette on the edges, red edges (binding worn with the upper jaw split, frontispiece title detached, some water stains, quires slightly loose with plates detached on pp. 48, 74, 104 and 121, a few stains on some plates, particularly near the inner joint, the problem having been a bit of damp).
A large and beautiful allegorical frontispiece, engraved on copper after a design by Parrocel, by Cars.
Featuring the full coat of arms of Charles de Lorraine, the dedicatee, engraved in a banner.
Known to have had only two editions in folio format, this being the second, augmented with a short Treatise on Stud Farms at the end.
Contains (5) folios, including the frontispiece after Parrocel, title page, dedication and preface, 318 pp., (5) folios. Table of contents with approval and privilege on the verso of the last leaf, 25 black copperplate engravings, including 3 double-page plates by Parrocel or Coquart for the technical plates. 5 headbands by Parrocel.
