Zhu Yuanzhi, known as Yun Gee, was a Chinese-American avant-garde painter born in China in 1906. In 1921, he joined his father in the United States, where he studied at the California School of Fine Arts and trained in painting and drawing under Otis Oldfield. He became involved in avant-garde artistic circles at an early age and, in 1926, founded the Modern Gallery in San Francisco with several artists and intellectuals, including Kenneth Rexroth, Jehanne Bietry-Salinger, and John Ferren. At the same time, he established a school for his fellow Chinese, where he taught painting techniques and modern art theories. His meeting with Princess Murat marked a decisive turning point in his career. Impressed by his talent, she encouraged him to move to Paris in 1927 and introduced him to the capital’s intellectual and artistic circles. There, Yun Gee moved in modern art circles, notably painting a portrait of Ambroise Vollard and exhibiting at the Salon des Indépendants in 1929, 1930, and 1939.
