Qiu Deshu

Qui Deshu (1948–) is a contemporary Chinese artist renowned for his innovative approach to painting and his works influenced by traditional Chinese culture as well as modern concepts. Born in Shanghai, he grew up during a period of profound social and cultural transformation, which left a lasting impact on his art. He is particularly celebrated for his technique known as "fissuring art" (裂变艺术), a unique process involving tearing, manipulating, and reconstructing materials, symbolizing the tension between destruction and reconstruction, tradition and modernity. His work often explores themes of cultural identity, the passage of time, and resilience. Qui Deshu's creations blend elements of traditional Chinese painting with contemporary artistic expressions, offering a complex and poetic reflection on the rapid changes in Chinese society.
