Nguyen Van Minh

Nguyễn Văn Minh (1934–2005): Master of Vietnamese Lacquer

Biography

Nguyễn Văn Minh, born in 1934, graduated from the Hanoi School of Fine Arts in 1958. Early in his career, he dedicated himself to mastering lacquer painting, a discipline he refined further during a study period in Japan (1961–1962).

Renowned for his exceptional technical command of lacquer, Nguyễn Văn Minh created in 1967 a monumental series of large lacquer panels to decorate the interior of the new Vietnamese Presidential Palace.

In 1975, he emigrated to the United States, where he quickly achieved significant success. His works were exhibited in America, France, Belgium, Italy, and Vietnam, consolidating his international reputation.

Today, his art continues to attract strong interest at auction, particularly for its balance between traditional Vietnamese aesthetics and modern expression.
