Marc Newson, born on October 20, 1963, in Sydney, Australia, is one of the most influential industrial designers of his time. His distinctive style, characterized by organic shapes, fluid lines, and a sculptural approach to design, extends across various fields, including furniture, watchmaking, automobiles, aviation, and high technology. His creations, often produced in limited editions, are now exhibited in the world’s most prestigious museums and are highly sought after by collectors.
Newson studied jewelry design and sculpture at the Sydney College of the Arts, where he experimented with innovative materials and aerodynamic forms. He quickly developed an interest in furniture design, and in 1986, he created his first iconic work: the Lockheed Lounge, a lounge chair covered in riveted aluminum panels, inspired by aviation. This piece rapidly became a symbol of contemporary design and set auction records, surpassing $3 million at a Phillips sale in 2015.
After his early career in Australia, Newson moved to Europe, where he collaborated with prestigious brands such as Cappellini, Magis, and Moroso. His passion for aerodynamics and innovation led him to create furniture with fluid, lightweight forms, evoking speed and motion, such as the Embryo Chair (1988) and the Felt Chair (1993).
In the 2000s, Newson revolutionized the watchmaking industry with Ikepod, a luxury watch brand known for its minimalist and rounded designs. His influence on watch design was so significant that in 2014, he joined Apple to collaborate on the design of the Apple Watch alongside Jony Ive, with whom he shares a minimalist and ergonomic vision.
