JonOne
John Andrew Perello, better known as JonOne, is an American graffiti artist and painter of Dominican origin, born in Harlem, New York, in 1963. JonOne dropped out of school early, rejecting the traditional education system to dedicate himself to his passion: decorating subway trains and blank walls with his creations, appropriating urban space to turn it into his open-air museum. The year 1984 marked a turning point for the artist: he created the group "156 All Starz" and met A-One, who worked to broaden the horizons of his young friend by introducing him to the world of exhibitions, travel, and museums, encouraging him to leave his native Harlem and enrich his artistic culture. In 1987, JonOne moved to France, where he settled in the former Bretonneau hospital, which had become one of the major artistic squats in Paris. The arrival of the young painter in the capital, where he discovered the unique French street art scene, coincided with his first compositions on canvas and the beginning of his fame, confirmed by various exhibitions in Berlin and Paris during the 1990s and the growing interest from many collectors.
Now recognized as one of the key figures in the international street art scene, JonOne has developed his own distinct and personal style. His compositions captivate the viewer's eye with their vibrant colors and energetic brushstrokes. JonOne’s art is born from a hybrid of two latent influences: graffiti writing and American action painting. Working in successive layers, the artist saturates his works with long, sinuous lines in various tones on a broadly brushed background. The monumental scale of many of his creations recalls the urban genesis of JonOne’s art and imparts the full force of street art onto the canvas, a permanent medium he enjoys using.
Aguttes' Street Art department was launched in 2011 to meet the growing demand for urban art.
