Auction estimation and market value of François Boucher (1703–1770)
François Boucher (1703–1770) was a leading French painter and a major figure of the Rococo style. Born in Paris, he was trained from an early age by his father, Nicolas Boucher, a draftsman. He continued his apprenticeship in the studio of François Lemoyne, who shaped his taste for mythological scenes. In 1723, he won the Prix de Rome, which allowed him to study at the French Academy in Rome. In Italy, he studied masters such as Correggio and Bernini, who influenced his sense of movement and sensuality.
Upon returning to France, he collaborated with the engraver Jean-François Cars to disseminate his works. He was admitted to the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1734. Boucher moved within Parisian artistic circles and associated with Jean-Baptiste Oudry. He became the favorite painter of Madame de Pompadour, whom he portrayed on several occasions. Through her patronage, he received major royal commissions. He also worked for the Gobelins and Beauvais tapestry manufactories.
His oeuvre is characterized by mythological, pastoral, and gallant scenes. In 1765, he was appointed First Painter to the King. Despite criticism from Denis Diderot, his influence remained considerable. François Boucher died in Paris in 1770, leaving a decisive mark on 18th-century art.
