Foujita

Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita (1886 - 1968) was born in Tokyo. Coming from a wealthy family of the Japanese military bourgeoisie, he was introduced to Western culture at an early age by his relatives.

He quickly enrolled in the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he focused on learning Western painting, graduating in 1910. In 1913, Foujita moved to France, where he discovered cubism and soon settled in Montparnasse, mingling with the most famous figures of the School of Paris.

The style developed by Foujita, which earned him a place as a true icon of the French artistic scene from the Roaring Twenties onward, is the result of a skillful blend between the indelible mark of his native Japanese culture and the influence of Western tradition, ranging from Gothic art to contemporary art, including the icons of the late 19th century.
