Daniele da Volterra

Auction estimation and market value of Daniele da Volterra

Daniele da Volterra (1509–1566) was an Italian painter and sculptor of the Late Renaissance. Born in Volterra, he initially trained in Siena under Sodoma and Baldassarre Peruzzi. He was also influenced by the art of Fra Bartolomeo, particularly in his treatment of volume.

Around the 1530s, he settled in Rome, the major artistic center of the period. There he met Michelangelo, who became his mentor, close friend, and principal source of inspiration. Daniele worked closely with Michelangelo and reused several of his drawings. His style combines Mannerism with the powerful anatomical approach inherited from Michelangelo. He produced frescoes and religious paintings, including the famous Descent from the Cross

After Michelangelo’s death, he was commissioned by the Pope to cover the nudes in The Last Judgment. This intervention earned him the nickname “Il Braghettone” (“the breeches-maker”). Despite this reputation, he was recognized as a talented and respected artist and moved within the leading Roman artistic circles of the 16th century. Daniele da Volterra was also involved in sculptural and architectural projects. He died in Rome in 1566.

Today, he is considered an important figure of Italian Mannerism.
