Estimate and odd: Chasse-Pot (1933–2010)
A sculptor of figures and popular memory
Born in Paris in 1933, Chasse-Pot devoted himself to sculpture from the late 1960s onwards, after a career in arts and crafts. With a keen sensitivity to everyday objects, he created a unique body of work, nourished by his observation of the social world and a style that was both tender and caustic. His characters – notaries, soldiers, onlookers, children – encapsulate a part of collective memory and humour in an immediately recognisable visual language.
Papier-mâché as a language
Chasse-Pot favours modest materials such as papier-mâché, wood, resin and pigments, which he transforms into expressive silhouettes and volumes with a strong presence. The material is worked in thickness, patinated, sometimes cracked, allowing the construction of the volume to show through. The attitudes are deliberately simple, almost “archetypal”, but the gaze, accessories and postures introduce nuance and narrative. The artist claims an aesthetic of humility: doing a lot with little, and leaving the hand visible.
How can you recognise a work by Chasse-Pot?
His sculptures are recognisable by their handcrafted nature, the use of moulded and painted papier-mâché, and their slightly offbeat characters reminiscent of old toys, found photographs and familiar iconography. The balance between apparent naivety and psychological accuracy creates an endearing presence; the formats vary from busts to almost life-size figures, sometimes in groups.
Recognition and exhibitions
Active in galleries and fairs since the 1970s, Chasse-Pot has been exhibited in France and Europe and features in several public and private collections. His work, long appreciated by a circle of loyal enthusiasts, is the subject of sustained interest for its plastic qualities and its roots in the popular history of sculpture.
