Jewelry & Fine Pearls
René Lalique (1860-1945) is renowned for being a major figure of Art Nouveau, not only in jewelry but also in glassmaking. His unique style is unmistakable.
His Journey
In 1876, René Lalique began his apprenticeship in the workshop of Louis Aucoc, a jeweler. After studying at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and spending two years in England, he settled in Paris and started providing designs to major jewelers such as Jacta, Boucheron, Cartier, and Gariod. Lalique also worked for Henri Vever until 1898, a renowned jeweler on Rue de la Paix, who taught him the plique-à-jour technique. In 1885, he took over the workshop of jeweler Jules Destapes and fully embarked on his career as a jeweler.
A Figure of Art Nouveau
The Art Nouveau movement, characterized by its flowing curves and arabesques, celebrated women and the natural world. The women depicted in Alphonse Mucha's posters exemplify this, embodying the spirit of the new century with their freedom and fluid forms, their sinuous hair floating amid blooming flowers. The women in René Lalique's jewelry are often hybrids—mermaids, dragonfly women, and butterfly women.
The Success of a Talented Artist
René Lalique’s astonishing jewelry was popular among wealthy clients, including the famous actress Sarah Bernhardt and the rich financier Calouste Gulbenkian. A passionate admirer of Lalique’s work, Gulbenkian amassed a significant collection, which can now be seen at the Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon. In 1900, René Lalique achieved unparalleled success at the Paris Exposition Universelle, marking the peak of his jewelry career. As the inventor of modern jewelry, Lalique innovated by using materials that were unusual for jewelry at the time, such as enamel, opals, and other semi-precious stones, often adorned with pearls and diamonds.
Market Update
In Lalique's work, we see the breadth of his genius. His fantastical creatures no longer shock anyone—they fascinate. These unique and poetic pieces are highly coveted, not only for their aesthetic but also for their craftsmanship. René Lalique's signed jewelry often fetches five-figure sums at auction.
