An iconic figure among 20th-century American artists, Alexander Calder's works—particularly his sculptures, including monumental pieces—have long been embraced by the art market. Auction houses, galleries, art experts, museums of modern and contemporary art, and the art world in general recognize his sculptures and paintings as embodiments of modern and contemporary art. As true cultural assets, Calder's sculptures are sold at auction by departments specializing in decorative art or modern and contemporary art within prestigious auction houses.
Alexander "Sandy" Calder, an American sculptor and painter born in 1898 and deceased in 1976, is best known for his mobiles—assemblages of shapes set in motion by air currents—and his stabiles. He studied painting, drawing, and composition in New York.
His early drawings were published in the New York press, including illustrations of sporting events, urban scenes, and circus acts. Acrobats, boxers, footballers, and dancers were captured in action by the caricaturist. In 1925, Calder created hundreds of brush drawings of animals at the Bronx Zoo and Central Park, which culminated in the book Animal Sketching. Through his depiction of animals, Calder revealed the essential element of his entire creative output: movement as a representation of life's vitality. What Calder sought to capture and convey in his sketches drawn from life was the emotion he felt in nature. In 1929, he moved to Paris and met renowned artists like Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, and Joan Miró. From 1930 onwards, Calder transitioned from wire "drawing" to fully embracing an abstract style, incorporating more abstract shapes.
