Private collection of the French consul Auguste François (1877–1935), diplomat, photographer, filmmaker and collector (acquired during his diplomatic posting in China between 1895 and 1904)
Private collection, France (passed down within the family)
Private collection, France (by descent to the current owner)

A diplomat from Lorraine, Auguste François (Lunéville, 1857–1935) joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1885 and left the following year for the Far East as part of Paul Bert’s Tonkin mission.

After serving as consul in Paraguay from 1893 to 1895, he was posted to southern China from 1896 to 1904, first in Longzhou, then in Yunnan-fu (Kunming) beginning in October 1899. There, he negotiated the concession for the railroad linking Vietnam to Kunming. During the Boxer Rebellion in 1900, he held out for over a month in his besieged consulate, then led a group of about twenty people to Tonkin. Curious and passionate about Chinese culture, he learned the language and took an interest in the country’s customs and way of life. A photographer and filmmaker, he also assembled collections of objects, which he incorporated into his stories and images to create authentic photoessays. His documents and artifacts are now preserved, notably at the Guimet Museum and the Quai Branly Museum.
