Naondo Nakamura was a Japanese sculptor and painter, born in 1905 in Nagano Prefecture. In 1920, he entered the Nihon Bijutsuin, where he studied wood sculpture under Hakurei Yoshida. Four years later, in 1924, he showed his work to the public for the first time at the “Inten” exhibition, which the institution holds every year.

In 1942, he turned to painting. During this period, he created, among other works, the illustrations for the serialized novel Kaigun, published in the daily newspaper Asahi Shimbun.

He then moved to Paris, where he worked from 1953 to 1964. Upon returning to Japan, he resumed sculpting and became a member of the Nikakai. At the group’s 65th exhibition, he was awarded the Prime Minister’s Prize.
