Wang Lanruo was one of the leading figures in 20th-century Chinese painting. Trained in Shanghai under renowned masters such as Huang Binhong and Pan Tianshou, he developed a solid mastery of ink painting, calligraphy, and poetry at a very early age. Throughout his career, he sought to reconcile the legacy of the great masters of the Song and Yuan dynasties with a more personal and modern approach. A passionate teacher, he passed on his knowledge to several generations of artists while continuing his ongoing exploration of the Chinese pictorial language.

These late works, some of which were created after he turned 100, are now regarded as the culmination of a lifetime of artistic exploration.
