Qi Baishi (1864–1957, China) is one of the greatest Chinese ink painters of the 20th century. Qi Baishi (1864–1957) is a great master of Chinese ink painting. Born into a modest background, he initially worked as a carpenter before devoting himself to art. He developed a personal style that modernized the Chinese tradition by incorporating themes from everyday life and elements of folk art. His talent was quickly recognized in China and then internationally, particularly thanks to exhibitions in Europe in the 1930s. Despite having no formal Western training, he became a major figure in modern Chinese art and was awarded the International Peace Prize in 1956.  

How can you recognize a work by Qi Baishi?  

His works are recognizable by their apparent simplicity and powerful expressiveness.   

He often used ink painting with rapid, spontaneous, and very lively brushstrokes, creating an impression of freshness and movement. His subjects were frequently inspired by nature and everyday life (shrimp, fish, insects, flowers), depicted in a stylized yet highly expressive manner. The balance between negative and positive space, as well as the spontaneity of his brushwork, are characteristic elements of his style. 

Qi Baishi on the Art Market: The Artist’s Value  

Qi Baishi is a highly valued artist: his works often sell for between €500,000 and €5 million, and major pieces can fetch €10 to €20 million. The highest auction records sometimes exceed €30 million for exceptional works.  

In 2017, a work by Qi Baishi sold for well over $100 million at auction, making him the first Chinese artist to cross that threshold. This was an exceptional sale, driven by the large scale of the work and strong market demand at the time.
