Pang Xunqin

Appraisal and Market Value of PANG Xunqin (1906–1985)  

Pang Xunqin was a Chinese painter born in Changshu. Between 1925 and 1929, he studied painting in Paris, notably at the Académie Julian and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. Upon his return to Shanghai, he participated in the Chinese artistic revival and co-founded the Juelanshe Society. His work is marked by the influence of Western avant-garde movements and by his interest in traditional Chinese decorative arts. As a teacher at several institutions, he contributed to the founding of the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts. Subject to political criticism beginning in 1957, he was sidelined from public life until his rehabilitation in 1979. His baimiao-style drawings of dancers in traditional costume are among his most characteristic works.

His auction record stands at approximately 3 million euros for Booming Flower (1978). Works on paper, particularly his famous dancer series and line drawings, generally sell for more affordable prices, while major paintings can exceed one million euros.
